U.S. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Brooks Tims (Retired)
"In May 2008 Brooks Tims was honorably discharged from the Navy after seven years of military service and three tours in Iraq as a combat medic with the Marine Corps Infantry. While in Iraq he was severely injured by multiple explosives."
| Home: | Southern California |
| Injury Incident: | Brooks suffers from a traumatic brain injury (TBI), combat stress, hearing loss, migraines and lower back pain caused by exposure to three explosions during three different tours in Iraq. |
| Operation: | Iraqi Freedom |
| Military Assignment (Iraq): | Marine Infantry Division 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, 7th Marines jump team |
| Immediate Family: | Wife and one very young daughter |
| Personal Interests: | Martial Arts, painting and being a father. |
| Current Situation: | Brooks left his job in October 2008 to obtain treatment for the multiple combat-related injuries which have plagued him and his family since his discharge from the Navy earlier in the year. He currently lives at The Pathway Home, a leading edge, non-profit short term residential healthcare facility dedicated to serving, our Nation's "New Warriors" - those of any age who have served our Nation's Global War on Terror in areas of the world such as Afghanistan and Iraq. These Warfighters have survived the stressors of war, but find themselves experiencing problems that are "getting in the way" of functioning at their top form. The Pathway Home Program can help to address many problems facing Warfighters and can help maximize each Warrior's mental and physical health, resiliency, and overall functioning. His wife and daughter remain in Southern California. Brooks expects to rejoin his family in the Spring of 2009. "With my current health problems I can't work or even concentrate for that matter. But hopefully I will be in better shape by this spring. At this point, I have a 90% disability rating and receive $1,800 per month in service-related compensation. For this help I am grateful. However, this amount is not enough to cover my family's living expenses even after we have cut them to the minimum. We carry a mortgage on our home and have exhausted our credit paying our bills. My wife works when she can, raises our daughter and goes to school. I intend to return to work once I leave the Pathways Home program. We are hard working people trying to start a family who have never had any financial problems before." - Brooks Tims |
