| Injury Incident: | In Iraq driving military trucks is a dangerous job. Always a target, a soldier is trained to move fast and not sit still. Unfortunately, Claudia was involved in a head-on vehicle accident in Baghdad in June 2003 that left her with a traumatic brain injury. |
| Operation | Iraqi Freedom |
| Military Assignment: | 257th Transportation Company, Arizona National Guard |
| Immediate Family: | One daughter |
| Personal Interests: | She likes jogging, a good book, listening to classical music and soft rock, and most of all, spending time with her daughter. |
| Current Situation: | Claudia's Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) was initially misdiagnosed; she forgot a few simple orders and was demoted in rank. Later, after a proper diagnosis, her previous rank was restored and she was honorably discharged. Claudia is 100% disabled. TBI manifest itself in many ways. Sudden seizures make it impossible for her to drive or have any level of independence and Claudia suffers hallucinations. Claudia has a three year old daughter but she cannot remember giving birth. She could not recognize her husband and consequently her marriage did not survive. Claudia cannot work and her sister is now her caretaker and constant companion. Financially strapped Claudia almost lost her home during her separation and ultimate divorce. And if her family had not intervened in the court to prove she was capable of taking care of her daughter, she would have lost her custody rights. The list goes on and on. The 9/11 HelpAmerica Foundation sends Claudia $200.00 per month and has paid some of her legal expenses. The Foundation also assists her in legal and financial matters as she is not able to deal with complexity. A Rebuild Hope sponsorship will enable the Foundation to continue to financially assist Claudia. |
| Sponsorship: |
An individual sponsorship will provide Claudia on-going financial assistance of $200 a month for a period of 18 months (total of $3600). Beneficiaries like Claudia are granted full discretion as to the use of funds; typically the funds are applied to general living expenses. Our partner, the 9/11 HelpAmerica Foundation, believes that stabilizing a household financially is a prerequisite for any long term recovery. While a sponsorship will not solve everything, it pays significant bills and reminds Claudia every month that people care. |

"Please know that I indeed am very appreciative of all of your support for me and my family. Your kindness and that of your friends helps me meet my financial responsibilities - now more than ever. My mother recently had a horrible auto accident in which she was severely injured and this has had a terrible effect on all of us. She use to take care of us now we have look after her. Our car was a total loss, so not only do we not have a car but it cost me over $1000.00 to make up the difference to avoid further problems. Now my daughter, my mother and I are having to rely on my sister for fulltime care. (Since)she lives in Mexico and is about to conclude a Master Degree on Business Administration, she must travel back and forth between the two Countries a few times a week. This unexpected situation has impacted me greatly in many ways not only financially but also in my recovery health plan." - Claudia.
