"Corey was a combat medic with the first Army unit to enter Baghdad during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). Physical combat injuries and a diagnosis of post traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) led to his medical discharge in late 2004."
| Home: | Terre Haute, Indiana |
| Injury Incident: | Corey hurt his back (upper and lower), shoulder and neck when he was thrown from a truck. His PTSD stems from his combat experience. |
| Operation: | Iraqi Freedom |
| Military Assignment: | U.S. Army, 555th Forward Surgical Team, Ft Hood, Texas |
| Immediate Family: | Single |
| Personal Interests: | Corey enjoys sports, woodworking, paint balling and auto racing. Though his schoolwork currently leaves little time for these activities he still follows his favorite teams - the Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts and Milwaukee Brewers. |
| Current Situation: | While Corey's life has changed in big ways, e.g., his marriage plans dissolved after he returned with lasting combat injuries, he is committed to rebuilding his life and currently divides his time between nursing school and renovating his small home. Unfortunately, the Veterans Administration has told Corey it intends to sharply reduce his disability rating and benefits and then begin to recoup previous benefits. This action would dramatically change his financial situation, jeopardize his home ownership and dampen his prospects of starting his nursing career in early 2009. Now 28 and single Corey is pursuing a baccalaureate degree in nursing at Indiana State University where he is a senior on-track to graduate in December 2008 and has been the president of the Student Nurses Association chapter for two years. After graduation, he intends to work in a healthcare organization and has enlisted the support of Hire Heroes to find a position. Corey purchased his home in 2007 and has already re-finished the floors, remodeled a bathroom and painted some of the interior with the help of family members. However many large repairs remain. He needs to update the electrical and plumbing systems, fix a leaking roof and repair uneven and broken concrete outside. His kitchen also needs a new floor. Estimated total cost: $8000 to 10,000. |
