Who you can help - the Castillo Family

Army Sgt. Enrique Castillo Jr. (Veteran)

"While on patrol in Mosul, Iraq machine gunner Enrique Catillo's Humvee was hit by a roadside bomb that killed his platoon sergeant and severely injured Enrique and their interpreter.

Home: Brownsville, Texas
Injury: Loss of right leg above the knee, scars to both legs and stomach from shrapnel; high blood pressure; traumatic brain injury; multiple symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (e.g., nightmares, social isolation, emotional outbursts).
Operations: Iraqi Freedom (2 Tours)
Last Military Assignment: 1st Calvary, 2nd Battalion, 7th Calvary Regiment, Alpha Company, 1st Platoon
Immediate Family: Wife and 2 children - youngest born in 2009
Personal Interests: "Love being the best father to both my two children and my beautiful wife. Enjoy fishing for black drum and red drum on the South Texas coast. Lift weights regularly with my brother/best friend. Was always my dream to become a firefighter after serving my country in the military."
Current Situation: "We are in need of financial assistance. When I was discharged from the military I returned to college but soon had to withdraw because my wife was pregnant and went into early labor. Since our son was born prematurely and hospitalized for several months, our plans - that I would return to school and my spouse go back to work - didn't work out. I was unable to care for my son alone because he was delicate and I wheelchair bound. We postponed our plans and have since depleted our savings. My wife has been actively searching for a job and I am planning to return to school this coming semester in order to continue my education and start a career. Having been a soldier it is hard to ask for help, however in my current situation I am looking out for the best interest of my family. We are struggling to keep up with our basic needs while living on a very tight budget. When my wife starts working - hopefully soon - we will be able rebuild our savings. I also intend to hold a part time job with the Veterans Administration while I am in school."
