U.S. Army Specialist Jerral Hancock (Active)
"Jerral, an Abrams tank driver, suffered extensive permanent physical injuries when he was trapped in his burning vehicle during combat in Iraq. He is overwhelmed by the the kindness of the people who have supported him through his year-long rehabilitation treatment in the military and VA health systems."
| Home: | Lancaster, California |
| Injury Incident: | Jerral was trapped in his burning tank after bring struck by an explosive device in Iraq on Memorial Day 2007. He is paralyzed from the chest down, his left arm is amputated at the shoulder and Jerral struggles with both Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and combat stress. His burns have required multiple skin grafts. |
| Operation: | Iraqi Freedom |
| Military Assignment: | 1st Battalion - 8th Cavalry Regiment - First Cavalry Division |
| Immediate Family: | Wife and two young children |
| Personal Interests: | Jerral enjoys basketball, video games and trying new activities/experiences that are compatible with his injuries. |
| Current Situation: | After 3.5 months at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio and 3 months at the Palo Alto Polytrauma Spinal Cord Unit, Jerral came home on November 22, 2007. He needs a van equipped with a lift that will increase his mobility. Now when Jeral travels he is being manually picked up and placed in a car and returned to a powered wheelchair. Jerral needs constant caretaking. If the family goes out, including his 2 kids, 2 vehicles must be taken. He has found the van he wants - a Dodge Sprinter - and while it is not his dream car it would fit the entire family allowing out of town trips, easy trips to the doctors, etc. He loves this van but unfortunately it cost $58,000 and the family cannot afford the down payment. |
| Current Requests: | Total: $2400 Handicap Van |
Received: $2400 | Request Fulfilled June 2009 |
