"After receiving an Honorable Discharge in 2002, Phil volunteered to return to service in Iraq in 2004. During this extremely violent period of the Iraq war, he crushed his L4-L5 discs operating a malfunctioning .50 caliber machine gun turret during 16 hours of heavy fighting, in Ar Ramadi, Iraq. Although he was medivac'd to Baghdad ER, instead of going home Phil returned to duty with his injuries and was later diagnosed with PTSD. Twelve Marines from Phil's unit were killed in action, including his commanding officer who was killed by a suicide car bomber. It wasn't until a couple years later he discovered he had also been living with the symptoms of traumatic brain injury (TBI) as a result of multiple concussions from RPGs and IEDs. Phil had never heard of TBI."
